Since 1997, the Welsh Language Project (WLP) has been promoting and developing the Welsh language in the Chubut region of Patagonia, Argentina. Every year three Language Development Officers from Wales spend from March to December teaching in Patagonia. How descendants of Welsh settlers in Patagonia are preserving the language 150 years on. Most Patagonians born before 1950 speak Welsh as a first language. They have the confidence of native speakers, while the softness of Spanish diction makes their plosives (p,t,c,b,d,g) less sonorous. The strong, guttural ‘ch’ sound is more mellow. There are phrases that show how Spanish has influenced Welsh syntax. Patagonia doesn’t usually advertise in the Wall Street Journal, attend job fairs, or hire corporate headhunters to find new employees. We prefer instead to seek out people through an informal network of friends, colleagues, and business associates. We don’t want someone who can just do a job; we want the best person for the job.
