[Game Preview] Week 5 - Philadelphia Eagles(1-2-1) at Pittsburgh Steelers (3-0)

| It’s that time again for the battle of the Keystone state. The Eagles are looking to build on their first win of the season when they upset the 49ers last week on Sunday Night football, while the Steelers are looking to get back on the field as their game with the Titans was postponed due to the Titans being morons. The game will be a match up between two of the best defensive lines in the NFL this season. Eagles lead the league with 17 sacks, while the Steelers are right on their tail with 15 sacks despite playing one less game. The Eagles patch work offensive line held up last week against the 49ers but they were without their best pass rusher in Nick Bosa. This week, Jordan Mailata and the rest of the line will be tested early and often and will need to hold up to give Carson Wentz time to find his band of rag tag WRs. However, he may get some help this week with the return of Alshon Jeffrey who could be playing his first time since suffering a Lisfranc injury last season. Jeffrey will give Carson something he has been severely missing this season in a big WR who can make contested catches along the sidelines. The Eagles may also see the return of JJAW and Desean Jackson as both have practiced in a limited capacity this week after missing last week’s game due to hamstring injuries. Carson and the Eagles offense will need all the help they can get facing one of the league’s top defenses in a year where they have struggled to get much going in the first four games. On the other side of the ball the Eagles will face one of its toughest tests this season especially Darius Slay who will be following JuJu Smith Schuster. If Slay can shutdown the JuJu the Eagles offense will have a good chance of holding the Steelers in check and give a chance to their offense to win the game. We will see if the Eagles can hold on to the belt of PA this Sunday in their toughest test this season. Go Birds! |

| The Eagles blocked a Chris Boswell field goal on the opening drive to deny the Steelers three points. The Eagles drew first blood with a Caleb Strugis field goal to make the score 3–0. Early in the 2nd quarter, Rookie Quarterback Carson Wentz threw a 12-yard touchdown to Jordan Matthews to extend their lead to 10-0. The Steelers answered with a Chris Boswell field goal to make it 10-3 which ended up being their only scoring play of the day. Strugis notched another field goal to bring the score to 13–3 at the half. Early in the 2nd Half, Wentz threw his second TD of the day, a 73-yard touchdown to running back Darren Sproles. Following a 3 and out by the Steelers, rookie running back Wendell Smallwood found the endzone for his first career rushing touchdown and it extended the Eagles lead to 27–3. On the Steelers next drive, veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger fumbled the football which the Eagles recovered. The Eagles would add another score on a Kenjon Barner rushing touchdown. The Eagles defense which had shutdown and frustrated the Steelers offense most of the day forced one more turnover to seal the game when Roethlisberger threw an interception to Rodney McLeod. The Eagles added another field goal for a final score of 34-3. |

| The Eagles traveled to western Pennsylvania to take on longtime in-state rival Steelers at Heinz Field. After a scoreless first quarter, the Steelers were able to get on the board first with Rashard Mendenhall's 13-yard touchdown run for a 7–0 lead followed by Shaun Suisham's 20-yard field goal for a 10–0 lead at halftime. The Eagles went to work in the 3rd quarter as Michael Vick found LeSean McCoy on a 15-yard touchdown pass to shorten the lead to 10–7. The Steelers increased their lead with Suisham kicking a 37-yard field goal to make the score 13–7. The Eaglesl took the lead with Vick hooking up with Brent Celek on a 2-yard touchdown pass for a 14–13 score. However, the Steelers were able to drive down the field and Suisham wrapped up the game with a game-winning 34-yard field goal for a final score of 16–14. |

| Eagles - The Eagles traveled across the country following an embarrassing tie to the Bengals in week 3. Doug and Carson looked to redeem themselves against a team that was suffering from almost as many injuries as the Eagles. The Eagles struck first with Carson running the ball in on an 11 yard scramble. Doug felt that he needed to dust off his balls and show everyone that he did in fact still have them after pussying out last week, deciding to inexplicably go for 2, but it paid off to put the Eagles up 8-0. The 49ers answered with a score of their own when rookie WR Brandon Aiyuk hurdled Eagles safety Marcus Epps and found the endzone. After halftime the 49ers came out firing and took their first lead of the game with a George Kittle TD. The Eagles answered with a field goal to bring the score to 14-11. After the Nick Mullens fumble the Eagles took advantage as Carson Wentz dropped a dime to Tyler Fulgham for a 42 yard TD pass to give the EAgles a 18-14 lead. On the very next drive Mullens threw his second interception of the game right to Alex Singleton who took it to the house for a pick 6 and put the Eagles up 25-14. On the next possession, Jim Schwartz switched to his shitty sticks defense despite the 49ers putting in their 3rd string QB Beathard. Schwartz gifted Beathard easy throws as he quickly moved the ball down the field for an easy TD. The Eagles recovered an outside kick, but went three and out. Schwartz continued to see the error in his sticks defense as Beathard again moved the ball with ease, but thankfully the Eagles players made some plays breaking up some key passes and bailing out their coach’s poor decisions. |

| Steelers Offensive Line vs Eagles Defensive Line |
| As the Eagles defensive line goes so goes the defense. That statement has always been true for the Eagles under Jim Schwartz, but that has never been more emphasized this year given the lack of talent elsewhere on the defense especially at LB. This defensive line has been firing on all cylinders with a league leading 17 sacks through 4 games. This has been especially the last two weeks, helping to limit any potential damages they may take during games. Two weeks ago, Burrow was sacked 8 times; they followed that up with 5 more sacks this past Sunday night. Additionally, Philly pressured Niners starting QB Nick Mullen on 50% of his drop backs, a massive figure. They'll need that juice to carry over this week again and like it did the last time these two teams faced each other 4 years ago. It also must be said the Eagles need their talented defensive line to control the LOS to prohibit any Steelers rushing attack. Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, and Malik Jackson are all off to hot starts on the season. Newbie Javon Hargrave, making his first return trip to Pittsburgh this Sunday, had a slow start missing the first game of the season due to a training camp injury, but he has started to heat up the last two weeks. Derek Barnett had probably his best game one week ago and is looking to build off that as the season continues. If it does, then it'll look like Barnett has taken a long-awaited jump in play. Josh Sweat is starting to prove his own hot start isn't a fluke either. Genard Avery decided to throw his name into the ring last week getting multiple pressures and notching a sack and 5 QB hits against the 49ers Control the LOS and you can control the game. That has to happen again on Sunday if the Eagles want a chance to win. |
| Steelers bevy of Offensive Skill Position Players vs the Eagles Depleted Secondary |
| Last week, the Eagles did a great job containing the Niners outside receivers and predictably got obliterated by George Kittle. That last part isn't surprising since Kittle does that to everyone but the Eagles have already shown a total inability to defend TEs and the middle of the field on defense due to being completely devoid at talent at the LB position. Additionally, the Eagles struggle to really cover anyone since they don't have a member of the secondary that can consistently cover like Darius Slay. Granted, Jalen Mills had a decent game last week, but the Steelers offensive weapons are much deeper than the Niners. Dionte Johnson, Juju Smith-Schuster, Chase Claypool, and Eric Ebron will all be very difficult for the Eagles to defend as the game goes along. They each have different skill sets but what they all possess is an ability to consistently get open for Big Ben. We've also seen Juju, Dionte, and Claypool all create big plays after they catch the ball. The Eagles will have to come out with a gameplan to account for this and play disciplined enough to prohibit the big play. There is still a lot of room for error on the back half of this Eagles denese; if they can execute like they did this past Saturday night, that would help limit the potential damage. |

| If there is one thing the Eagles prioritize more than anything in the draft and in free agency it's building a great offensive line with a lot of depth. This has been a pillar of the organization for over two decades and it has paid off for the Eagles the entire time. Few times in recent history has that philosophy been put to the test and stressed the team like it has so far in 2020. As it stands, the Eagles have, at best, a league-average offensive line and that's largely due to injury as they are currently missing their starting LT, RG, and LG. Sunday has a chance to be the 5th time in 5 weeks the Eagles will have a different starting offensive line combination if Lane Johnson can't go this week. Poor offensive line can cripple an offense. It can derail a passing attack if the offensive line can't keep the offense in a rhythm and keep the QB from being under duress. It forces coaches to give extra attention to the area which takes away from their ability to be creative when they need to leave an extra guy in to block. Additionally, constant OL shuffling and a degradation in talent can hinder a rushing attack since the players on the bottom end of the roster just can't execute at a high level the pillars of the offense. That's a situation the Eagles find themselves in on Sunday against one of the best defensive fronts in the NFL. The Eagles offensive line had their hands full against a Niners line that is still good despite its own major injury issues. At EDGE, the Steelers have a perennial DPOY candidate in TJ Watt to go along with a solid and athletic pass rusher in Bud Dupree. They also have stalwarts in the interior with Cameron Hayward and Stephon Tuitt. Long time NFL veteran Tyson Alualu, former 1st round pick of the Jaguars, has suddenly elevated his game and is off to the best start in his career as well. The defensive front is very disruptive when paired with their LBs who excel in both run support and on blitz in Devin Bush and Vince Williams. Steelers DC Keith Butler is creative with his looks and pressure packages while being blessed without the need to blitz constantly. Even if Lane Johnson starts he won't be 100% and that's a problem for the Eagles. A Lane Johnson at less than 100% is still better than most NFL tackles but it'll likely be taxing to the Eagles since the depth of talent the Steelers have across their defensive line. The Eagles are down to mostly nobodies on offense and really need to get creative to string together some plays to have a modestly effective offense. Even when Wentz is on his A-game, offensive execution will still require near 100% effectiveness just to have a chance. This is perhaps one of the biggest OL/DL mismatches in the NFL in week 5 and one the Eagles don't figure to have a ton of success. If they are able to control the line of scrimmage on offense more successfully than previous Steelers opponents, that would go a long way in pulling out a win. |

[Game Preview] Week 4 - Philadelphia Eagles(2-1) at Tennessee Titans(2-1)

| The Eagles bounced back against their former OC Frank Reich, Andrew Luck and Colts as they squeaked out a 20-16 win. Carson Wentz was a little rusty his his first start since week 14 of last season, but showed why he was an MVP candidate last season before his injury leading a 4th quarter game winning drive. This week he will face a tough test as they travel to Nashville to take on Marcus Mariota the Tennessee Titans. The Titans are 2-1 this season under new coach Mike Vrabel and are coming off a big win in Jacksonville, where they won a defensive battle 9-6. The Titans OL will be put to the test again this week to protect a still beat up Mariota after surrendering 3 sacks to the Jaguars, they will face a Philadelphia Eagles line that is hungry and gets to the QB. The Eagles also own the top rushing defense again giving up just 61.7 yards per game. Fletcher Cox has wreaked havoc this season averaging a sack per game and blowing up run plays as PFF's top graded interior defensive linemen. However, Mariota has the speed and agility to break contain and pick up yards in chunks as he is just 21 yards away from gaining 1000 rushing yards for his career. On the otherside, the OL for the Eagles will have to be better this week protecting the QB especially facing a talented pass rusher in Jurrell Casey who is thriving in Mike Vrabel's defense. The Eagles offense should get a boost this week as Alshon Jeffery looks to start his first game this season after missing the first three after having surgery on his shoulder following the season. Eagles RB Jay Ajayi will also return to the fold this week after missing last week with a back injury. The running game did will in Ajayi's absence, but the WRs have been absent this season with the exception of Nelson Agholor, so getting Alshon back will be huge for the Eagles. On defense, the Eagles have to stop Corey Davis who has been the Titans only receiver this season leading the team in yards and receptions as second in yards on that list is Dane Cruikshank a safety who caught a fake punt. If the Eagles can shutdown Davis they should bring the Titans offense to a stall with their top ranked run defense. The game has all the makings of a defensive showdown, so we should probably expect a shootout, but time will tell. |

| The Eagles scoring started early as Josh Huff took the opening kickoff 107 yards for the TD. The Eagles D quickly got the ball back and marched down the field leading to a Darren Sproles TD run to put the Eagles 14-0. After a Cody Parkey FG, the Titans got on the scoreboard with a 40 yards Justin Hunter TD off a tipped ball. The Titans narrowed the gap to 6 on a Shonn Greene run midway to through the 2nd quarter, but that was as close as it got as LeSean McCoy added another Eagles TD on the ensuing possession. Ryan Succup adding a FG to make it a 10 point game going into the half, but after that it was all Eagles. As they added another TD in the second half as well as 3 more Cody Parkey FGs, giving him 5 for the game, while the Titans were only able to muster one more TD as the Eagles held on to the win. |

The Eagles held the a lead the entire game until the 4th quarter where Akers game the Eagles a 9 point lead early in the quarter. However, on the ensuing possession, Kerry Collins hit speedy WR Kenny Britt for an 80 yard TD to bring the Titans within 2. The Eagles went 4 and out there next 3 possessions while the Titans added 2 Bironas FGs and another Britt TD to give themselves an 11 point lead with just 26 seconds to play when Cortland Finnegan picked off a Kevin Kolb pass and took it to the house to seal it for the Titans. |

| Eagles - Video – Eagles QB Carson Wentz returned to the lineup for the first time since suffering a torn ACL in week 14 last season. Wentz had to shake off some rust, but showed he still had quite a bit of wiggle let him in him moving around in the pocket and throwing for 255 yards and 1 TD. Wentz found rookie Dallas Goedert for the rookies first TD, but Indianapolis answered with a Ryan Grant TD following a bad PI penalty by Jalen Mills trying to cover TY Hilton. After the game was tied at 7 the two teams traded FGs with the Colts taking a 3 point lead 16-13 at the beginning of the 4th. Carson Wentz found some magic in his pocket and led the Eagles on a scoring drive that resulted in a Smallwood rushing TD to take the lead 20-16. The Colts worked their way down the field, but Derek Barnett chased down Luck for a 4th down sack in the red zone to seal the game for the Eagles. |
| Titans - Video – It was slow start on both sides in Jacksonville and it never really picked up. Blaine Gabbert got the start for the banged up Mariota, but was forced to leave the game after taking a shot to the head which forced Mariota into action. Mariota gave the Titans offense a slight boost, but the game still ended up going into halftime tied at 3-3. The Titans took the lead after with a scoring drive aiding by a defensive PI call that culminated into a Ryan Succup field goal. On the other side, Bortles struggled throughout the day, give some credit to the Titans defense, but Bortles was missing simple passes left and right and couldn't find his accuracy after throwing for 400 the previous week against the Patriots. Still they were able to string together some first downs and Lambo was able to tie the game at 6. The Titans were able to move the ball an kill some clock before adding one more Succup field to take the lead and hold on at 9-6. |

| Eagles Passing Offense vs. Titans Pass Defense |
| A lot has been amiss with the Eagles offense so far this season due to injuries carrying over into this year in addition to the new injuries mounting for the team. Sunday will be Wentz's second start of the season since he returned from ACL and LCL surgery and will look to build on a solid but imperfect Colts performance. It shouldn't take long for Wentz to return to MVP form considering his pedigree and how good the offensive coaching staff is. However, the Eagles still have a lot of banged up weapons on offense that are limiting the offensive performance. Alshon Jeffery has been cleared for contact but his status for Sunday isn't totally clear (as of this post). Agholor looks to be taking another step up in his young career. But those are the only two Eagles receivers that are healthy with any semblance of ability right now. Zach Ertz is still a top 3 NFL TE and Dallas Goedert has a lot of promise to develop into a top flight TE in his own right, but the lack of weapons outside at the moment has put a vice grip on the offense. Due to injury, the Eagles receiving core has looked like the 2016 version rather than the 2017 version on this young season. Alshon Jeffery's return will be a big boost to a struggling offense. The Titans enter this game with a young and ascending defense that has been well-coached so far in this young season. Kevin Byard is an elite, ball-hawking safety that Wentz will need to be mindful of. Adoree Jackson is an athletic and ascending corner. They even have Malcolm Butler, whose presence alone would have changed Super Bowl 52 history if you believe the delusion from Pats fans. Dean Pees (his pants) and Vrabel bring an aggressive and physical defensive front that brings a lot of fun and exotic blitzes that look similar to the Jim Johnson Eagles defenses. Twists and stunts are difficult for any offensive line to deal with - even an elite one like the Eagles. The offensive line will need to keep Wentz clean; Wentz will also need to find his open receivers quicker than he did last week and take the safer throws to move the sticks. Jurrell Casey is a great defensive tackle similar to Cox and Harold Landry has been a welcomed addition on the EDGE. The Titans have struggled with the run so far on the early season but Eagles will need to improve through the air in order to keep the pressure off their own defense and force a struggling Titans offense into doing more than shooting blanks. |

| As previously mentioned and as the stats show the Titans offense has been struggling mightily to start the season. There are a lot of reasons for it: scheme change, injuries, tough matchups, etc. Their offensive line is set to return RT Jack Conklin this week to go along with LT Taylor Lewan, who returned from injury himself last week. Together they are as good a pair of tackles that you'll find in the NFL. They'll need both to deal with the numerous pass rushers the Eagles have on the roster. Where the Titans have really struggled on the early part of the season is along the interior of the offensive line that was pretty solid the previous couple of seasons. That should be music to Fletcher Cox's ears since he has been playing at a DPOY pace to start the season. It's hard to get a read on what the Titans offense will ultimately look like given the tumultuous start to the season, but it has been a struggle and their interior OL hasn't stepped up. Mariota has been dealing with yet another injury and how healthy he is right now isn't completely known. The Titans have had to rely on their ineffective run game a lot on the early season and if they have to again it plays into the Eagles favor. They've lacked a lot of explosive plays on the early season similar to the Eagles which presents the defense with an opportunity to control the game. The Eagles home/road splits on defense (especially against the pass) aren't encouraging for this contest but the overall match up is. If the defensive line can continue to bring the heat on a dinged up Mariota, it could go a long way to winning this game. |
| Eagles Pass Defense vs Titans Pass Offense |
| This key battle aligns with the previous one. The Titans pass offense has been a complete dumpster fire this season for many reasons. Truthfully, this battle should be called "Marcus Mariota vs Success" but I still believe in the Hawaiian. With the release of Rishard Matthews, the Titans receiving group is thin on proven talent and has been underachieving quite a bit so far. Corey Davis was the highly touted rookie last year and has flashed in spurts. His inconsistencies have stemmed from injuries and an ineffective offense overall. He's still a very talented player and we have seen the Eagles secondary stink out loud against lesser receivers than Davis - especially on the road. Taywan Taylor is another young receiver that has struggled to see the field for the Titans. Tajae Sharp is only capable of beating non-players. Unfortunately for the Titans, Delanie Walker is done for the season and really puts a huge dent in the Titans plans. Hicks and Bradham back and healthy for the Eagles is a huge boost for the pass defense considering the lack of proven options for the Titans at TE. One area they could look to exploit the Eagles is the use of Dion Lewis in the passing game. Hicks and Bradham are one of the best LB groupings in the NFL and are excellent in coverage; but the Eagles do occasionally struggle with running backs in the passing game. We haven't really seen Lewis used in this fashion this year but the Titans have basically had a one-armed Mariota and Glaine Babbert at QB. The Titans should also try to attack the middle of the field with the recent news that safety Rodney McLeod will miss the rest of the season. The Eagles have a solid option in Corey Graham to replace him but McLeod is a big loss as he is a big upgrade to Graham and prevents the Eagles from using one of their popular coverage packages. The lack of proven options in the passing game and the rash of injuries to the Titans offense should play into the Eagles favor, especially against the pass. Mariota has struggled on the season but can still turn it around at any moment. Depending on Mariota's status, they should really look to lean on him more through the air at least on early downs. Their success rate on first down runs has been poor and they run too much overall. A lot of that has probably been out of necessity but they need to adapt in order to boost their current putrid output. While the Eagles defense is very talented and well-coached, they have been known to bite the cheese and give up big plays. The Eagles need to pounce on this unit while they are still struggling as a lot of its own offense works its way back from injury. Pressure and hit Mariota. Do not give up the big play. |

| The Eagles proved the pundits and Vegas wrong as they pulled out a win against the Atlanta Falcons last Saturday despite being the first number one seed to be an underdog in their first game of the playoffs. The Eagles welcome the Minnesota Vikings to Lincoln Financial Field where they are again in the Underdog role as Vegas has them a +3. The team and the city embraced the moniker as Amazon as sold out of German Sheppard mask 2 separate times now since the masked were donned by Eagles DE Chris Long and RT Lane Johnson following the win against Atlanta. Overcoming the odds will be a little harder this week as the Vikings finished the season with the same record as the Eagles at 13-3 and boast one of, if not the best defense in the league this season. The Vikings have an impressive front seven which includes Linval Joseph, Everson Griffen, Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks, the unit is great at creating pressure and is second only to the Eagles in stopping the run. They also boast an impressive secondary that can play man to man and cover anyone in the league. Pederson and Reich will have their work cut out for them craft a game plan that will allow Nick Foles to succeed. I expect a lot of quick passes and leaning on the run game with some screens and the occasional shot to keep the Vikings off balance. On the other side of the ball, the Vikings have a backup of their own leading the offense in Case Keenum, however Keenum has been at the helm since week 3. Keenum has weapons on the outside in Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen to go along with big Kyle Rudolph at TE. The key for the Eagles will be getting pressure on Keenum which is where he struggled last week. The Eagles front seven has been great at putting pressure on the QB this season, so expect Graham, Cox, Curry, Long, Jernigan and Barnett to get after it. The game will be tough one, but the Eagles have played extremely well at home this season going 8-1 with the only loss coming to the Cowboys in a meaningless game where the starters were rested. The home crowd will try to push their team over the top to make it to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2004 season. |

| Eagles - Video The Eagles welcomed the Falcons in the the Linc where they have played well all season and continued that trend Saturday. The Eagles struggled early fumbling the ball 4 times in the first half and giving it away twice one of which was a short field of a muffled punt. The Eagles defense was able to hold the Falcons to just 10 points in the first half. The Eagles were able to come away with a TD and added a last second 53 yard FG to close out the half and bring the game with in a point. The Eagles added two more FGs in the second half, while the defense shutout the Falcons for the 15-10 win. The Falcons had a chance to win it at the end, but the Eagles defense held strong on the late goal line stand denying a Matt Ryan and Julio Jones 3 times. Following the game the Eagles embraced the underdog moniker as Chris Long and Lane Johnson donned dog masks. |
Vikings -
Video – The Vikings came out firing on all cylinders to start the game as they jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first half and picked off Drew Brees twice. Brees and company were not going to go away quietly though as they fought back in the second half. Brees through 2 TD passes to Michael Thomas to bring that game within 3 before Forbath added a field goal to stretch the lead to 6. The games excitement level went through the roof at US Bank stadium. Alvin Kamara ran it in with 3 minutes left to give the Saints their first lead of the game. A minute and a half later Forbath kicked his third FG of the game for the Vikings to give them back the lead before just over a minute as Brees drove the Saints down the first and Lutz added a FG of his own to take the lead back. With just 25 seconds on the clock Sean Payton mocked the Viking faithful before Keenum completed a pass to Diggs to take them up to the 39 yard line before launching another pass to Diggs which he caught and spun away from the defender to go 61 yards for the game winning touchdown in dramatic fashion.|

Despite having a much higher average grade of starting Offensive Linemen, the Eagles' OL has allowed the same number of pressures as Minnesota's (154). The Vikings have allowed 12 fewer sacks, however. The Eagles' OL edged the Vikings' in terms of Pass Block Efficiency, which measures pressure allowed on a per-snap basis with weighting toward sacks allowed.
On the other side of the ball, Minnesota has an Interior Defender positionally in the top 10 (9th) in Run Stop %, Linval Joseph, while the Eagles have an Edge Defender positionally in the top 5 (4th) in Run Stop %, Vinny Curry. As far as Pass Rushers go, the Eagles have 2 Edge Defenders in the top 20 for Pass Rush Productivity--also a snap-weighted stat--in Brandon Graham and Vinny Curry, while Minnesota has 2 Edge Defenders in the top 20 for total pressures generated, Everson Griffen and Danielle Hunter. On the Interior, Vikings cannot much the pressure generation of the Eagles, with Fletcher Cox leading the way and spreading the rest out just about evenly between Beau Allen and Timmy Jernigan. The Vikings also have even pressure generation between Tom Johnson and Linval Joseph, but the Eagles main DIs have generated about 30 more pressures in total, in the regular season.

| Eagles Offensive Line vs Vikings Defensive Front |
| The Vikings enter the NFCCG with the most talented defensive front the Eagles will face on the season. The Eagles defensive matchups will be discussed later on but this match up here is probably the most important match up for the Eagles to win this game. If you only took the word of Vikings fans, you’d walk away thinking everyone on the Vikings is literally Jesus and the Eagles don’t have a chance. We know that is not true since the Vikings do not have a Pro Bowl safety and that makes them fallible. Up the middle they feature the former but still quite literal giant Linval Joseph who finished the season as the 11th best Interior Defender per PFF and 10th best Defensive Tackle on NFL1000. Joseph is monster against the run and pretty solid as an interior rusher as well. His presence gives Zimmer the opportunity to send the blitzes he wants to send with regularity. Joseph is a strong finisher and can more than adequately handle himself on double teams. Next to him is Tom Johnson, who is PFFs 53rd rated interior defender and NFL1000s 15th. Johnson is a pretty reliable 3-tech that is good as a pass rusher and in the run game. The Vikings also have a great EDGE rushing duo in Everson Griffen and Danielle Hunter. Griffen finished as the 10th best EDGE rusher on PFF, which is misleading given his score was an elite 90.1. He also finished as a 3rd best 4-3 DE per NFL1000. He is a game wrecker and is excellent as a pass rusher and run defender. Danielle Hunter obviously overcompensates for his girly name and openly carries his guns on Sunday’s. Per PFF Hunter ranks as the 32nd EDGE rusher and the 20th ranked 4-3 DE per NFL1000. They are as formidable a pair as the Eagles have faced all season on a line that is as talented as the Eagles as a whole. This doesn’t include Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks who will also look to party in the backfield Sunday as Mike Zimmer is not afraid to bring his patented Double-A Gap blitzes. Fortunately, the Eagles have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL even without Jason Peters. Lane Johnson and Jason Kelce are the best players at their respective positions in the league and 1st team All-Pros. Brandon Brooks is also deserving of All-Pro honors even though he wasn’t recognized as one. Stefan Wisniewski has been a very reliable left guard all season even with some bumps in pass protection. Big V has been up and down this season at LT but would start at tackle for a number of teams in the NFL. This is the premier match up in this game and could really help determine the winner. With Foles at QB, the Eagles coaches and OL must consistently execute the game plan well against a defensive line that has the ability to take over games. The Eagles will need to find a way to be balanced against this group while keeping Foles clean. It won’t be an easy battle for the Eagles and Vikings may get their share of wins, but if they play well enough they could help control the game. The trenches can make all the difference. |
| Eagles Defensive Line vs. Vikings Offensive Line |
| The reason why Mike Zimmer had eye problems the last few years was due to having to watch his offensive line. Gone are the days of human turnstile TJ Clemmings. The Vikings made a strong effort to reshape their OL this past offseason; in the process, they elevated their offenses level of play. Make no mistake; while the unit is improved it’s still vulnerable to good defensive lines. The Eagles have the best defensive line the Vikings will face this season. Rookie Pat Elflein has solidified the Center position for the Vikings and has had a solid year despite ranking 32nd on PFF among all Centers. Free agent acquisition Riley Reiff has been solid at Left Tackle finishing as the 14th best Left Tackle on NFL1000 and the 60th best tackle per PFF this season. Don’t let the wide variation in grades fool you, he is better than anything they’ve had of late and it has been a noticeable difference. Old man Joe Berger occupies one guard spot for the Vikings and has had a solid season for them finishing as PFFs 15th ranked guard. Berger has been equally good in run and pass protection. These three have helped steady a very bad offensive line but are they good enough to help hide the holes that have presented themselves of late? At the end of the regular season, starting guard Nick Easton landed on IR. The Vikings decided to shift Mike Remmers inside to fill his position while starting Rashod Hill at Right Tackle. Needless to say Hill has been a liability outside for the Vikings and will see a lot of Brandon Graham during the game. Hill struggled a lot with Cam Jordan last week and it doesn’t get easier this week. Fletcher Cox is fresh off a game wrecking performances and looking to attack the suspect Vikings interior line. The Eagles can bring the heat from all spots along the line and can do it with more regularity than almost every team in the NFL. The Vikings struggled for part of the game last week. They’ll likely struggle again this week in this department. How much is to be determined but the Eagles certainly need their defensive line to wreck the Vikings game plan in order to win. They’ll be an influence in this game it’s just a matter of how much. |
| Nick Foles vs. Vikings Pass Defense |
| The Eagles enter the game with one of the best rushing attacks in football thanks to good running backs and one of the toughest, well-executed run schemes in the league. Like the Eagles, the Vikings defense is excellent against the run. The Eagles will use the run game to help put the offense in more favorable situations and to keep the Vikings off balance but at some point Nick Foles is going to have to help the offense move the ball down the field. The Vikings defense is very talented in the secondary featuring a lesser Malcolm Jenkins in Harrison Smith, who is a candidate for DPOY. The Vikings use Smith everywhere and for everything. He finished as one of the best players in the NFL per PFF this season. Andrew Sendejo is in the concussion protocal but appears to be trending towards playing this week. Sendejo is the more traditional deep safety for the Vikings whose presence allows Harrision Smith to do his thing. The Vikings also feature one of the leagues most talented corners in Xavier Rhodes. Opposite him you’ll see 3rd year pro Trae Waynes. Rhodes is ranked as the 31st CB per PFF while Waynes is ranked 59th. These ranks can be a bit deceiving, especially for Rhodes. Waynes has become a good cornerback the last few years but is someone offenses would rather target than Xavier Rhodes. The Vikings also rotate Terrance Newman and Mackenzie Alexander into the game plan. The Eagles should be aware when either of these two are on the field and attack them with Nelson Agholor. Nelly has the speed and quickness to beat these two cornerbacks and make plays for the offense. Alshon Jeffery has had the time of his life against the Vikings considering he has done very well against them since 2013. The Vikings defense disguises a lot of their coverages and play smart football. They are very difficult to beat through the air especially when you factor in their pass rush. They are beatable when the rest of the pieces are put together on offense but it is going to have to take the Nick Foles the Eagles had in the second half of their first playoff game for the duration of this one. Otherwise, it could be a long day for the Eagles offense. |
| Eagles Defense vs. Vikings Weapons |
| This will be one of the more difficult matchups for the Eagles defense on the season when they take on the plethora of weapons and diverse offensive scheme the Vikings bring to the table. The Vikings enter with the 3rd ranked passing offense per DVOA on the season and it only makes sense when you look at the seasons Case Keenum, Stefon Diggs, and Adam Thielen have had. Both receivers are able to line up outside or in the slot and are excellent route runners with even better hands. It’s pretty amazing watching these two receivers go to work except for the fact the Eagles have to find a way to neutralize them this week. Diggs and Thielen finished 8th and 9th respectively per PFF among all WRs. Diggs finished as NFL1000 7th ranked outside receiver while Thielen finished as NFL1000 2nd ranked slot receiver in the NFL. Both are able to diagnose coverages, beat press man coverage, and find soft spots in zone defenses. Did I mention the hands? They’ll catch every Keenum YOLO ball when his ambitions are unable to match his arm talent. Speaking of Keenum where the heck did that come from? Say what you want about his future outlook but the season he has had is a testament to his ability to at least be good and the coaching staff’s ability to help him succeed. Keenum finished as PFFs 8th ranked QB and NFL1000 10th ranked QB for the 2017 season. He is able to diagnose coverage and find his receivers. He’s also built up a lot of chemistry with his receivers and trusts them to make plays with the football when he puts the ball in position. Keenum has been pretty good under pressure on the season, especially when outside the pocket. The Eagles will need to keep him in the pocket while rushing him hard and fast forcing him to make mistakes. We saw in the second half last week when he is under a lot of pressure he can make a lot of bonehead throws. He’s been fortunate on some to have talented receivers to make plays but has also done a good job putting passes in places that won’t hurt the team. The pass rush he’ll face Sunday is one of the best he’ll see. The Vikings will need to continue to beat man coverage given the emphasis the Eagles place on it. The Eagles need to be mindful of rub routes and all of the mesh routes/pick plays Shurmur likes to run to free open his receivers. The Eagles will be better served by mixing their coverages more often than normal. Confuse Keenum while forcing him into taking hits and making poor decisions. The Vikings still have the reliable tight end Kyle Rudolph. While he is down from the pace he set last year, he is also a reliable receiver and a popular red zone target for the Vikings. The Eagles need to be very wary of who is on the field and force the Vikings into 3rd and long situations. The the Vikings offense is nowhere near as effective on 3rd and long as they are in more favorable situations. Latavious Murray and Jerrick McKinnon are solid and complimentary backs but they aren’t the dynamic rusher that Dalvin Cook is. The Vikings offense took a solid hit when he went down. The Eagles will need to continue to dominate opposing rushing attacks while keeping the Vikings offense in worse looks to prevent them from winning their matchups more often. The receiving duo of Diggs and Thielen is probably the best starting pair the Eagles will face this season. The Eagles will more that earn that W if they manage these two. |
