Different countries want startups to relocate there and are offering incentives - would you take them?

Hey all,
I just published some research on what different countries are doing to entice entrepreneurs to relocate. Whether visas, grants, mentorship, coaching... there's a lot.
Question for the group: Would you consider relocating / moving your startup post-COVID?
Content:
Visas, Incentives, and More: Here’s What Countries are Doing to Attract Remote Companies
As lockdowns ease, more than a few entrepreneurs are thinking about what’s next for them and their businesses, especially if they’ve chosen to stay remote. As news hit about remote worker visas in Barbados, or as small towns and cities are more equipped than ever to lure weary big-city remote workers, you’ve got to ask… what about the founders?
Sure, remote founders can work from anywhere just like their teams. Where things get interesting, though, is that many countries are launching programs to lure entrepreneurs to relocate their businesses or start up a new company - and with them come access to public funds, free visas, and even a path to citizenship. As governments think about recovery from COVID and general growth for the future, a handful are getting serious about offering a lot of perks to entice entrepreneurs to relocate.
All programs have three key elements to them, though in differing quantities:
  1. Accelerated / extended resident visa permits.
  2. Access to the country’s startup support ecosystems.
  3. Funding / financial support.
So if you’ve ever thought about relocating, being an entrepreneur is one of the fastest tickets out. In this article, I’ve highlighted a mix of programs, but it’s not necessarily exhaustive. I tried to focus on the programs with unique elements or that are easy to apply for. While large funding requirements or other hurdles may not be a problem for many companies, my goal here was to highlight the programs that work for the majority of entrepreneurs, including small businesses and freelancers who recently went remote.

France: La French Tech

France has a long history of artisan entrepreneurship but less in the big tech or digital scene. However, the government is hoping to change that with its La French Tech visa programs.
There are three kinds of La French Tech visas:
The founder-focused program requires you to get accepted to one of France’s 30+ startup incubators and accelerators, so your ability to get in hinges on that acceptance.
France also has a unique program in the sense that it provides a 4 year visa automatically (most other programs only provide 1-2 year visas) and family members are automatically granted residency rights regardless of which visa you get. Finally, the program is diploma agnostic - it’s geared towards creative people and entrepreneurs, not necessarily only STEM grads like many other countries.
Internet connectivity is relatively high quality in cities, though it can be lacking in the countryside. If you’re relocating, check for good internet service first.

Startup Chile

Chile is hoping to attract entrepreneurs with cash, incentives, a visa, and the natural beauty of the country.
The Startup Chile program is actually an accelerator - billed as the “best accelerator in LatAm.” As part of the program, though, non-citizens are granted a one year visa to live in the country while building your company.
Highlights of the program are:
Chile is not known for blazing fast wifi, but if you’re in the accelerator and living within city boundaries, you should be alright.

Startup Denmark

The kingdom of Denmark seriously wants entrepreneurs to relocate there. Named by the World Bank as the number one country in Europe for doing business, the country wants to further attract entrepreneurs.
The Startup Denmark program is geared to helping people realize the ease of doing business in Denmark, specifically:
Internet connectivity and penetration is very high in Denmark, so high-tech companies (or even just remote companies with a lot of zoom meetings) should be just fine.

Enterprise Ireland

The only English-speaking country on the euro, Ireland is a prime place for doing business. Its geographic location makes it easily accessible to Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and North America, and its low corporate tax rate has already attracted major players including Google and Starbucks.
Enterprise Ireland has also launched an entrepreneur visa, which is specifically for entrepreneurs who can:
Despite rigid sounding rules, the visa program is actually quite flexible. For instance, the fundraising requirements can be through almost any funding option, including using your own money and not taking any investment dollars. Further, the notion of being “controlled” from Ireland is more flexible than other countries that require a certain percentage of business to be done in the country for founders to be eligible for a visa.

EntrePass Singapore

Singapore took the world markets by storm in the past few decades, going from a small island nation with no natural resources to a global hub of finance and casinos. Now, the country wants to be known as a hub for global entrepreneurship.
The EntrePass in Singapore grants founders a 2 year visa to live in Singapore while building a business. Like other programs (France, for example), businesses must be accepted into an accelerator in order for the founders to qualify for a visa. However, where Singapore adds a bit of strictness is two-fold:
  1. The business must be net-new or less than 6 months old at the time of application. This program is only for new businesses.
  2. Your business must be accepted into a government-backed accelerator or receive funding from a government-backed investor.
The Singaporean government is usually tolerant with expats, but the laws on the island can be incredibly strict. The program can be amazing for new entrepreneurs, though, especially given Singapore’s strategic location and relatively low taxes.

Italia Startup Visa

Known for fine leathers, fashion, and amazing food, Italy is now hoping to become known as a centre of innovation.
The country offers two kinds of visas for non-EU entrepreneurs:
The Visa is made for entrepreneurs who aren’t currently in Italy but want to relocate there to start / scale their business. The Hub option is for people already in Italy who want to stay and launch a business (I think Italy caught onto the fact that people sitting in gorgeous villages sipping a coffee might just want to stick around).
Visa programs came about through Italy’s “Decree 179/2012,” which is the country’s program to explicitly attract what they deem ‘innovative startups’ to the country. In general, innovative startups by Italy’s definition are technology companies that either invest more than 15% of their revenues to R&D, employ PhD-level researchers full-time, or own patents for inventions or ‘original software.’
The visa lasts for 1 year, but is renewable for another 2 years. While business taxes in Italy can be fairly high, the relatively low cost of living can balance those costs out.

SMART Visa Thailand

Thailand is one of the only programs to highlight that spouses and children are automatically granted residency (along with France) - and that your spouse will have a work visa included in their residency permit as well.
The country’s SMART visa program has four tiers:
S visas are explicitly for entrepreneurs and startup founders, and have three options: a 2-year, a 1-year, and a 6-month visa. The 2-year program is for designated high-tech startups, the 1-year for incubator and accelerator-backed startups of all varieties, and the 6-month visa is intended for sales and promotion in Thai markets as opposed to setting up shop in Thailand.

Startup Visa Lithuania

A Baltic country bordering Poland and Latvia by land and Denmark and Sweden by sea, Lithuania has some of the fastest internet on the planet and gorgeous medieval towns and sea views.
The visa program is part of Startup Lithuania, a government-backed organization geared towards helping Lithuania succeed in global markets.
Recognizing that many people have probably heard the name “Lithuania” but don’t know much about it, the Startup Visa program focuses heavily on soft landings with guides on how to relocate, connections to other relocated workers and entrepreneurs, and links into the country’s extensive support programs for businesses.

Startup Estonia

The original “digital society,” Estonia is regularly in the news for how connected their society is. The internet is fast, citizenship is digital, and the country even launched a remote worker visa to entice more people to relocate.
On the entrepreneur side of things, Startup Estonia launched a Startup Visa to encourage entrepreneurs to relocate to Estonia. The program is very explicitly focused on technology-based companies with global market potential, but Estonia has the minimum required capital of all programs in Europe (you only have to prove you have around $2,000 USD for a one-year visa).
Entrepreneurs can apply for a 3-month visa to test the waters and get set up, or a 12-month visa to make the move and begin the process of permanent residency.
Like its cousin Lithuania, Estonia has beautiful scenery, sea views, and a high quality of life.
More info: https://startupestonia.ee/visa

Entrepreneur residence permits (Sweden)

Sweden is known in the business world for producing the likes of IKEA, but it’s also a welcoming country for entrepreneurs with companies of all sizes.
While Sweden doesn’t have a flashy website or dedicated startup-lingo page, the Nordic country has a Self-Employment Residency visa, which provides up to 2 years stay - with a path to permanent residency - for self-employed individuals.
The capital requirements are fairly low - you have to prove you have around $25,000 USD to support yourself while on visa - and you can apply from anywhere in the world. The primary potential downside for remote entrepreneurs is that this visa requires you to produce and/or sell the majority of your business’ goods and services in Sweden, which could be a challenge for a distributed workforce.
More info: https://www.migrationsverket.se/English/Private-individuals/Working-in-Sweden/Self-employment.html

Not sure about relocating quite yet?

One of the wins of remote work is that you can physically do your job from anywhere. So if you’ve been dreaming of relocating but not sure about taking the actual plunge, plan an extended working holiday.
Depending on where you’re from, most countries will allow you to stay at least a few weeks (and upwards of 90 days in some cases) with no visa or simply on a tourist visa.
If you’re planning this kind of “working holiday,” here are some places to consider visiting (that have great, accessible wifi) for when the world opens back up:

New City State Ideas for Civ 6

Some city-states may be replaced when they are added as complete civilizations (Lisbon > Portugal) and I feel like there should be new city state, so here are some ideas.
Monaco: Trade city-state. Suzerain can build the Casino unique improvement: +3 Gold. Additional +2 Gold and+2 Culture if adjacent to coast. Cannot be built adjacent to another Casino
Knossos: Cultural city-state. Arenas produce +2 culture for each adjacent district and +1 faith for each adjacent improvement
Çatalhöyük: Cultural-state. Suzerain can build the Hüyük unique improvement: +1 Housing, +1 Culture and +1 Faith. Additional +1 Housing of adjacent to at least one other Hüyük and +1 Culture for every adjacent Hüyük. Maximum 4 Culture if not built on a desert tile. Can only be built on flat desert, plains or grassland tiles.
Teotihuacan: Religious city-state. Suzerain can build the Teotihuacan Pyramid unique improvement: +2 Faith. Additional +1 Faith and +2 Culture if adjacent to at least one other Teotihuacan Pyramid. Can only be built on flat desert or plains tiles.
Jubail: Industrial city-state. +2 production to all improvements built over oil. Industrial zones produce +50% energy from power plants if they are built adjacent to the coast (eg: 1 coal equal 6 power)
Tahiti: Military city-state. Suzerain can enter ocean tiles without the usual requirements and has +2 movement when starting the turn in ocean tiles. +5 combat strength when fighting in ocean tiles
Samarkand: Scientific city-state. International trade routes owned by it’s suzerain provide +1 science for every commercial hub building at the destination. Additional +3 science if the owner of the trade route (Samarkand’s suzerain) has established a trading post at the destination)
Singapore: Industrial city-state. Cities receive +1 production for every trade route passing through the city. This production bonus is tripled if the city has a harbor oand a commercial hub
Helsinki: Cultural city-state. +2 culture and +1 appeal to tiles adjacent to Entertainment Complexes (this bonus is stackable). +5 Gold and +1 Amenity from Entertainment Complexes
Munich: Scientific city-state. Cities with a Campus district have access to the Scientific Museums project, which once completed grants science equal to 10 times the culture output of the city
Feel free to ask anything about the city-states if you are interested in their history or don’t know them at all

Earlier we learned about the second major criminal investigation around the South-Caucasus Railways (1st was dodging millions of $ in taxes; 2nd about not investing the required 194bln and subsequent cover-up by Transport Ministry staff), now there is the third criminal case.
The employees of the railways giant are accused of dismantling metal parts from the locomotive engines in two locations, with the intention of selling them for personal profit. Other employees were aware of the theft but failed to take action. The suspects have been charged with a crime.
The investigators are also examining the truthfulness of the 110bln investments that the company claims to have made.
The South-Caucasus Railways is a Russian company that won a 30-year lease to operate the railways in exchange for extensive investments. Pashinyan has earlier spoke about this with Putin, and the latter expressed the Russian side's willingness to cooperate with this case.

Criminal charges are pressed against the chief and several members of Urban Development Committee of Kotayk Province for falsifications and abuse of power.
The chief is accused of falsifying documents about a construction project that he was overseeing. He then colluded with a local municipality employee in charge of municipality's construction monitoring, who also falsified documents claiming the construction was done and met the standards, before submitting it to the city administration. This led to the illegally or only partially constructed building to be registered in the Real Estate Cadastre database.

This is an interesting interview by the former military chief prosecutor Gagik Jhangiryan. It's about October 27th terror attack, pre-attack situation, political assassinations of 90s, and March 1st. He explains why Kocharyan cannot have presidential immunity according to the Constitution.
He also says that years earlier, the officials (during Kocharyan administration) ordered him to be killed because he had a big mouth. The police came to his residence and set up a situation as if they, him and his brother, were threat to the police so they could kill him and his brother. The police opened fire and wounded his brother, says Jhangiryan. He was arrested for ripping a police officer's pants during the altercation. Jhangiryan says those days, the prosecutors would jail any opposition member for even the smallest things.
Nikol Pashinyan (journalist) had earlier expressed similar concerns while he was a fugitive with an arrest warrant against him on 2009. He was afraid that the police would kill him in a similar fashion. He ended up voluntarily turning himself in while being recorded on camera. He was sentenced to several years in prison for "hooliganism and rioting".
(Disclaimer: Gagik Jhangiryan is a big Kocharyan critique, and former defense minister Vasgen Sargsyan's ally. The above was his version of the events.)

Fees will also go up for services such as piano, music and dance classes provided by city-run schools. The city will subsidy the increased cost so the parents will pay the old fees, while the institutions will receive the new and higher fees to be able to increase teacher salaries and provide more classes.

Mayor Marukyan was facing criticism from opposition Luys party members for "not working fast enough" on the public transportation reform. (Marukyan earlier said realistically 2-4 years are needed for a complete rehaul including 900 new buses).
Marukyan said they have to wait for the British company tasked with assessing the situation to do their work coming February. They have to do it the second time because the first one (on 2017) was inaccurate. The company has agreed to re-assess the situation for free.
Verbal battles: Marukyan blasted Luys members, who run a committee tasked with negotiating with said British company, for earning their salaries but "providing insufficient and bad report on the subject, which is why his administration needs to do the assessment work all over again". Luys leader responds noting that Marukyan's criticism of salary is inappropriate.

Government-run seismic research company is cooperating with Japanese "Challenge" organization to detect earthquakes through seismic waves and predict when the main shock is going to hit.
The company has provided 7 EQGuard detection units, which have been placed in Garni, Yerevan and other cities. The sensors can be attached to the main gas and electric grids, and disconnect the supplies to residential areas to prevent gas explosions and fires, in the event the sensors predict that a big shock could do damage to the delivery pipes. They are still being tested.

Hraparak paper confirms the story that we learned about earlier that Russia is pressuring Belarus for a greater institutional, monetary and civil integration.
Various leaders, including Pashinyan and Lukashenko, are set to negotiate gas prices at this time of the year. The objective is to lower the prices, or at least to keep them the same. Lukashenko-Putin meeting lasted 4 hours, and ended with Putin's refusal to lower the gas price for Belarus. Pashinyan will meet Putin on December 27th.

Azeri Haqqin.az media outlet, closely tied to Ilham Aliyev's chief of staff Ramiz Mehdiev, published a misleading article read by Azeri citizens over 30,000 times, in which the author claims EU adopted a very important pro-Azerbaijan resolution about Artsakh.
The author, Tamila Alieva, claims the EU members voted 401-173 to state that Artsakh can only be part of Azerbaijan, in a big victory for glorious leader Ilham Aliyev.
FIP says the Haqqin journalist twisted the story, presented it only partially, and purposely did not provide the link for the viewers to the original source: http://www.europarl.europa.eu/sides/getDoc.do?type=TA&reference=P8-TA-2018-0513&language=EN&ring=A8-2018-0392
The EU agreement's 19th clause talks about the EU's stance on Eastern Partnership countries (part of which are Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine, etc). The 19th paragraph's main point is countering Russia's advancement in these countries' territories, and the member's territorial integrity. Haqqin points out that the part about territorial integrity, which by the way isn't new and has been in every single similar resolution, is a result of some kind of a diplomatic victory.
However, the article fails to mention that the same EU resolution also makes mention of 1975 Helsinki resolution, which recognizes people's right for self-determination (applies to Artsakh as well).
In addition, the 19th clause says member states' territorial integrity must be solved in accordance to the international law, in other words according to Helsinki 1975 resolution as well. Helsinki 1975, being an international law, has the higher authority in the resolution and is written in the preamble of the document.
The article also mislead about EU high ranking official Frederika Mogerini being behind this "pro-Azeri" breakthrough.
Intended narrative: Ilham Aliyev's great foreign policy resulted in EU's highest politicians intervening and passing a resolution that states Artsakh can only be part of Azerbaijan.
Reality: EU passes an annual report reminding that all conflicts must be resolved peacefully, based on people's right for self-determination and countries' territorial integrity.

Wonderful Wonderful 2018 Tour Dates

Hello everyone! Figured we would keep a running list of the upcoming shows with times and the opening act since that seems to be a common question! The times should all be the local time. Please let me know any corrections. I will keep this updated with new dates and announcements!

Education

Mississippi's Constitution, which was drafted after a convention in 1868 by a biracial committee, provided free public education for all people between the ages of 5 and 21 years. The state had little tax money to fund the school system, however, due to a heavily agricultural economy. Many black communities matched money raised by Julius Rosenwald to build schools and develop the educational systems in their communities.
Public schools were heavily segregated until the late 1960's (despite the 1954 Brown v Board of Education ruling which declared "separate but equal" schools to be unconstitutional). While a small minority of white students were withdrawn from public schooling following integration, 91% of the state's students remain publicly educated.
Mississippi has the ignoble distinction of ranking last or near-last in many measures of educational achievement, including in spending per student (45th), math scores (50th), science scores (50th) and in ACT scores (50th); it ranks well-above average in SAT scores. However, only 3% of students take the SAT.

Sports in Mississippi

With no professional franchises in the state, Mississippi's sports scene is dominated by college and minor-league athletics. Southern Miss, Ole Miss and Mississippi State all have successful NCAA programs and have significant following throughout the state.
Several developmental baseball franchises, soccer and hockey teams call Mississippi home, including franchises for the Atlanta Braves and the Milwaukee Brewers.

Fun Facts*

  1. Washington Nationals relief pitcher Jonathan Papelbon pitched for Mississippi State University. This is widely regarded as the worst thing to come from Mississippi in the last 25 years.
  2. The Teddy bear can trace its origins to a hunting trip Teddy Roosevelt took to Mississippi in 1902, when he refused to shoot a bear that had been captured and tied to a tree.
  3. The international Checkers Hall of Fame is in Petal, Mississippi. If you are standing next to another patron at an exhibit, you may only move by attempting to jump over that person.
  4. The world's first lung and heart transplants were performed in Mississippi in 1963 and 1964, respectively.
  5. Free slaves from many states, including Mississippi, would go on to found the nation of Liberia, which became an independent nation in 1862.
  6. Jackson (along with Moscow, Helsinki and Varna) is one of only four cities of the world sanctioned by The International Theater-Dance Committee to host the International Ballet Competition.
  7. Coca Cola was first bottled in 1894 in Vicksburg (it was previously only available as a fountain drink). Barq's Root Beer was invented in the state four years later in 1898.

Want to go to Russia (St Petersburg) for 72 hours without a visa? I did it, and will attempt to create a fairly comprehensive guide for those interested.

For many countries' citizens, including almost all of the west, a visa is required to enter Russia. However, there is one notable exception. Here are the basic rules and info:
  1. You can only stay in Russia for 72 hours. The clock starts once you cross Russian border control after getting off the ferry in the morning.
  2. You must book a round-trip ferry with St. Peter Line. They have everything arranged so you follow all the rules. You must enter AND leave Russia via this ferry. You may not enter or leave by plane, bus, train, car, horse, etc.
  3. You must book a tour. Now, this is a bit of a gray area. St Peter Line automatically books you a $25 "tour" that is literally a shuttle bus between the ferry terminal and St Isaac's Cathedral (plus a few other places along the way but the cathedral is the most central). You can ride it as many times as you want. If you want to purchase a different guided tour then I don't believe you need to purchase the shuttle bus "tour". Technically you are supposed to stay on the guided tour the entire time but this is a bit of a loophole that St Peter Line takes advantage of (don't worry you won't get in trouble with any Russian authorities).
  4. You may not leave St Petersburg and go anywhere else in Russia. This is another gray area (e.g. I'm not sure if Peterhof is okay but your time will be limited enough as it is so just stay in the center) but I would not abuse this one. You're doing that at your own risk.
  5. You also may book a cruise (e.g. it stops at each port for a limited time) and enjoy 72 hours visa-free with St Peter Line or another company (some companies this doesn't apply to so be careful). If you do this you MUST return to the boat each night. You cannot book accomodation.
  6. If you book the ferry then you can stay in a hostel, hotel, or probably an AirBnb or with a friend (another gray area, you're supposed to have a booking confirmation but we were not asked to present it at any time). So hostel or hotel is safer. You may stay 2 nights maximum.
  7. The boats do hold cars but you need a visa to travel with a car.
Other general information:
  1. There are two boats: Princess Maria and Princess Anastasia. Maria only goes between Helsinki and St Petersburg and Anastasia travels different combinations of routes between Stockholm, Helsinki, St Petersburg and Tallinn.
  2. From Tallinn or Helsinki your journey is about 14 hours and will most likely be overnight, arriving around 8 AM. From Stockholm it's more like 38 hours and still leaves in the evening and arrives around 8 AM just with another day in between.
  3. The boats are essentially cruise ships (they use them for the cruises as well) with restaurants, live entertainment and a casino (though rumors are it's rigged so be careful). The food is decent but the service is generally unfriendly. The entertainment quality varies. Which brings me to my next point.
  4. How much does this all cost? It's actually quite affordable. It's best to go in a group of 2, honestly. The cheapest cabins sleep 2 and have private bathrooms. For round trip ferry (and 2 nights accomodation on board) was 188 euro for 2 people, so less than 100 each. That includes the mandatory $25 "tour". But you get a bit of the Ryanair treatment. Nothing is included; if you want to watch a movie, swim in the pool or even use the wifi you will have to pay. The free wifi is very good in the Helsinki terminal though (but not in St Petersburg.)
  5. Don't drink the boat tap water! Not even for teeth brushing. My friend got sick and we aren't sure it was from that but it was probable. In general don't drink the tap water in Russia either.
  6. You aren't allowed to bring food or alcohol on board. I wasn't aware and had food in my bag but the bags go through a scanner and no one said anything. So do what you want.
Personally I'd recommend Maria from Helsinki. That's what I did and the route for Anastasia is a bit odd. (Sidenote: if you're in Tallinn, take the super nice ferry to Helsinki!) Remember you have to leave within 72 hours and the ferries don't run every day (most days though). So for example here was my route.
Depart Helsinki September 23rd 18:00, arrive St Petersburg September 24th 8:30.
So I had until roughly September 27th at 8:30 to leave. But you'll have to leave the night before.
So I booked the 24th and 25th in a hostel, and the return ferry was the 26th and left St Petersburg at 17:00. But if there happens to be no return ferry on that date, you'll need to leave a day earlier or change your departure date.
The process:
It's honestly a lot simpler than I originally thought even though I'm going into a bit of detail here. Basically:
  1. Book your round trip ferry and be sure the dates are within 72 hours like I mentioned above. If you really wanna do Anastasia it might be worth contacting St Peter Line to confirm the schedule and how long it stops at each port. You will have the option during booking to add lots of extras like meals and such. I recommend passing on all of these. For the cheapest option for 2 select the B2 cabin and the mandatory shuttle bus "tour".
  2. Book accomodation for the 2 nights in between.
  3. Print your booking confirmation for both the boat and your accomodation. Don't forget your passport either.
  4. You may check in for the ferry several hours early if you want and up until about an hour before (I think 30 min in Helsinki but don't push it, get there earlier). You need your passport and your boat booking confirmation. You will receive a boarding card, arrival card and departure card. The boarding card is also your room key and has your room number on it.
  5. You can get on the boat now if you wish or wait until later depending on how much time you have. You'll go through Schengen exit border control and security.
  6. Enjoy the boat! I recommend getting down to the exit point a bit early the next morning to beat the queue at Russian border control. It won't matter as much going back into Schengen.
  7. Give the Russian border agent your passport and arrival card. They will keep the arrival card and fill out a migration card for you. Don't lose it. You get to see what your name looks like in Russian.
  8. Look for small unmarked vans outside (I'm serious). These are the "tour" shuttles. Show them your departure card but hold onto it. They'll take you to the city center. You already paid for this so might as well take advantage of it. Don't get ripped off by a taxi.
  9. Enjoy St. Petersburg! They may ask at your accomodation for your visa but explain your situation and show them the papers and you'll be fine.
  10. Don't miss your shuttle and especially don't miss the ferry back. You'll receive the shuttle schedule at check-in the first time. Don't worry, there will be a convoy of the vans each time so there is room. I don't recommend taking the last one.
  11. Remember to check in again at the terminal before going to passport control! You'll receive a second boarding card. When passing through Russian border control again give them your passport, the boarding card, departure card and the stamped card you got the first time. They'll keep the latter two papers.
  12. Enjoy the ferry back and the fact that you made it to Russia visa-free!
Useful info for Russia:
  1. You won't have anywhere near enough time to really explore St Petersburg but you'll get a nice taste. Do NOT miss the Hermitage/Winter Palace complex. It is incredible and you could spend 72 hours there alone. Cathedral of Spilled Blood is awesome too. Do a walking tour. Eat at Marketplace and Teremok. Try Georgian food too if you can. Soul Kitchen is supposed to be a fantastic hostel. I stayed at Cubahostel which was decent. I'm not going too in depth in this area, do more research on your own :)
  2. It helps to learn the Cyrillic alphabet because words are pronounced as they are spelled and many sound like English words. This was definitely rewarding and quite useful.
Also you may read that you need a letter of invitation or a paid hotel voucher. You don't. Only for a visa. Maybe TECHNICALLY you do but everyone I asked including St Peter line and my hostel said just bring a booking confirmation. We were not asked to present this but it's definitely worth bringing.
Anything else I missed feel free to ask in the comments. I did ramble a bit here because I'm on a flight with nowhere to go but honestly the process is much simpler than I originally thought. Do it. St Petersburg is a beautiful city.

JaguarGator9's Week 9 Weird Stat Thread Analysis

I haven't done this before, but someone requested it, so I'm gonna see what I can do. As you guys know, I post my weird stats every week, and you can check out the week 9 thread here. Thanks for all the support on that.
So, with that in mind, did the stats hold up this week? Obviously, I'm only taking a look at the stats that could've changed this week; anything involving historic things (like the Packers/Panthers game from 1999) or future things (like Broncos' Super Bowls in relationship to songs) won't be looked at. With that being said, let's take a look.
The last time the Rams won an outdoors game against the Vikings was in 1985.
Vikings win. That one holds up.
The Rams have never won a game played against the Vikings in the month of November in Minnesota. The Rams are 0-5-1 in those games.
Make that 0-6-1. Vikings win.
A music-related stat: The Panthers have won four times against the Packers. All 4 times have been when the #1 album of the previous year, according to Billboard sales, was one word.
Year of Panthers’ Victory Previous Year’s #1 Album
1999 Titanic (1998)
2000 Millennium (1999)
2005 Confessions (2004)
2008 Daughtry (2007)
Luckily for the Panthers, last year’s #1 album was… Frozen. Based off of that stat, there’s a chance for Carolina on Sunday.
That one held up. The music related one still works somehow.
Additionally, the Panthers have won 4 times against the Packers. When the Packers lose to the Panthers in the regular season, they have never made the postseason. Keep in mind that since Carolina entered the league, Green Bay has only missed the playoffs 5 times; 4 of those were when playing and losing to the Panthers.
Don't think that one's gonna hold up, but with the Vikings tied for first in that division now, you never know.
The turnover margin in games between Tennessee and New Orleans has been exactly 1 five times. When the turnover margin is exactly 1, Tennessee is 5-0. When the turnover margin is anything other than 1 in favor of Tennessee, Tennessee is 2-5-1.
Make that 6-0. Titans won the turnover battle by exactly 1.
New England has beaten Washington three times. All three times have been when the #1 R&B/Soul/Hip-Hop single of the year, according to Billboard, was sung by a female artist AND had a 3-word title.
Year of Patriots Victory #1 Single of Previous Year
1972 Mr. Big Stuff (Jean Knight- 1971)
2007 Be Without You (Mary J. Blige- 2006)
2011 Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready) (Alicia Keys- 2010)
When the song does not meet that criteria, New England is 0-6. The #1 R&B/Soul/Hip-Hop single of last year was “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. Good news for Washington.
Doesn't hold up anymore. New England won.
The three times that New England won against Washington, the host city of the EuroVision Song Contest was hosting for the first time. In 1972, Edinburgh hosted for the first time ever. In 2007, Helsinki hosted for the first time ever. And, in 2011, Dusseldorf hosted for the first time ever. Unfortunately for New England, the host of the 2015 EuroVision Song Contest (Vienna) hosted the contest in 1967, so it was not their first time hosting. More good news for Washington.
Doesn't hold up. The 2 music stats can't save Washington today.
Since 1990, the Bills have swept the Dolphins eight times. Again, we’re doing a music related stat. The #1 song of the previous year was a multi-word title.
Year of Bills Sweep #1 Single of Previous Year
2013 Somebody That I Used to Know (Gotye featuring Kimbra- 2012)
2007 Bad Day (Daniel Powter- 2006)
2006 We Belong Together (Mariah Carey- 2005)
2004 In da Club (50 Cent- 2003)
1999 Too Close (Next- 1998)
1994 I Will Always Love You (Whitney Houston- 1993)
1991 Hold On (Wilson Phillips- 1990)
Why do I bring this up? The #1 single of last year was “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. The Bills won the first game of the series earlier in the year, so they can buck the trend if they can pull out the victory on Sunday.
Doesn't hold up anymore. Bills completed their sweep of the Dolphins with the #1 single being 1 word.
Every game played between the Jaguars and Jets in the month of November has been decided by 3 points or less
It was 5 points. Close, but no cigar.
The longest winning streak in the Jags/Jets series is 3. The Jets can match that with a win on Sunday
Jets matched that with their victory.
The last time the Jaguars beat an AFC East opponent on the road was in week 5 of 2010 against the Buffalo Bills
Still holds up. That's not good.
The last time the Jaguars won a road game was in week 13 of 2013 against the Cleveland Browns
Yeah... um...
The last time the Jaguars’ game following the bye week was against a non-divisional opponent and they won was in 2007, when they faced the Kansas City Chiefs coming off of their bye week
I don't wanna talk about it...
The last time the Jaguars won a road game in November against a non-divisional opponent was in 2009 against the New York Jets. They play the Jets this week.
You can imagine I wasn't a happy camper with today's game.
The last 4 meetings between the Jaguars and Jets have taken place in 4 differently named stadiums: Alltel Stadium (2006), Giants Stadium (2009), MetLife Stadium (2011), EverBank Field (2012)
Trend is over. MetLife Stadium hosted the game today.
Oakland is 0-3 against Pittsburgh in the month of November
Make that 0-4. Steelers win in dramatic fashion
Eli Manning has never lost to Tampa Bay
Still holds up, even if the Vegas casinos had a field day with the final few seconds of that game
Blaine Gabbert has never won a game played west of Indianapolis.
That wasn't supposed to happen
Blaine Gabbert has never thrown more than 2 touchdown passes in a game.
He threw 2 today. Doesn't break it, but hey, baby steps
In the last 2 meetings between the 49ers and the Falcons, the losing score was 24 points
16 points today by the Falcons lost it. That one doesn't hold up.
The last time the Eagles swept the Cowboys and didn't finish with a .500 record or better was 1964. Basically, sweeping the Cowboys almost guarantees success for Philadelphia.
We don't know if that's held up yet, but today's win was a very good sign for the Eagles, even though it wasn't a sweep.
Sam Bradford has never beaten the Dallas Cowboys. Considering the fact that Matt Cassel's completion percentage against the Eagles is over 75%, this may not be in a guaranteed win for Philly.
And... debunked. Sorry, Cowboys' fans. Bradford got his first win.
